What is a Live Scan?
Live Scan is a digital fingerprinting process used by the State of California to capture your fingerprints electronically and submit them directly to the California Department of Justice (DOJ), and in many cases, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Unlike traditional ink fingerprinting, Live Scan is faster, cleaner, and far more accurate.
Live Scan is often required for:

If you’ve been asked to “get a Live Scan,” it means your fingerprints will be digitally scanned and securely sent to the appropriate agency for a criminal background check.
How Live Scan Works
The Live Scan process involves several steps:
- Complete Your Request Form
You must bring the Live Scan Request Form (BCIA 8016) from the agency or employer requiring the background check. This form contains the ORI code and specific instructions for where your results should be sent.
- Present Valid Identification
Acceptable IDs include a:
- California driver’s license
- California identification card
- U.S. passport
- Military ID
- Out-of-state driver’s license (in some cases with additional documents)
- California driver’s license
- Digital Fingerprint Capture
The technician rolls each of your fingers across the glass scanning surface. The system automatically checks the prints for clarity and completeness.
- Secure Transmission to DOJ/FBI
Once scanned, your fingerprints are encrypted and transmitted electronically to the DOJ and, if required, the FBI.
- Background Check Processing
The DOJ/FBI compares your prints to state and federal criminal history databases. Processing times vary from a few hours to several days, depending on the agency.
